Our client approached JML Garden Rooms to design and build a bespoke writer’s bothy within the lochside grounds of their home. The brief was to create a quiet, writer’s retreat beside the waterfall - a space for writing and reflection. Large windows frame the view and capture the gentle sound of the stream, immersing the bothy in its natural surroundings. Inside, the design provides room for a writing desk and a cosy reading corner with an easy chair -- perfect for quiet moments of contemplation and inspiration.
Access to the steep, sloping site presented a significant logistical challenge and required meticulous planning. All-terrain vehicles were used to transport materials safely down the banking, supported by plenty of manpower and precision coordination from the JML team.
JML’s in-house architectural team worked closely with the client to develop the bespoke design, carefully integrating every detail of the brief. We collaborated with local groundworkers and a specialist ground screw company to prepare stable, sustainable foundations. Our skilled joinery team then erected the custom SIPs kit and completed the full external and internal fit-out. Rust-toned corrugated cladding was paired with horizontal Thermopine timber to complement the natural landscape, while the birch ply interior was fitted with a refined shadow gap detail to create a warm, tactile finish. The result is a beautifully crafted, minimalist hideaway that feels both grounded in nature and designed for creative focus.
"I wanted a peaceful, creative space away from the noise and clutter of daily life - somewhere calm and inspiring, not just another home office. From the first meeting, Claire and the JML team understood exactly what I was looking for. Their attention to detail and craftsmanship are exceptional and they handled the challenges of the site with ease. It’s a space that brings real order and calm - I miss it whenever I’m away."
