7 Great Outdoor Garden Room Ideas from JML

So, you’ve decided to build your very own Garden Room. Congratulations!

A Garden Room is a fantastic addition to any home. It allows you to extend your living space without the expense of architects' plans and planning permission or the disruption to your home with building works to your house. Garden buildings act as flexible, functional, and customisable extensions to your current home. Gone are the days of the old “garden shed”, which were uninsulated and only used between May and September, gathering dust and cobwebs the rest of the year; these are truly state of the art, stylish and functional spaces.

With a JML Garden Room, you have the choice of one of our innovative, off the shelf designs, or we can design something completely bespoke to suit your individual needs better. A JML Garden Room is made using only the finest quality materials and comes with a ten-year structural guarantee, giving you peace of mind and allowing year-round use. Whatever the size of your outdoor space, we can create the perfect room to suit your requirements.

There are so many different uses for your garden rooms; the list is endless. However, if you are looking for some inspiration for your Garden Room plans, look no further than this page.

1. A garden office

As more of us are now working from home, we’ve found that working in the same environment we relax, eat and sometimes even sleep in can be detrimental to our mental health. Spending extended time inside the same space can lose its appeal very fast and be detrimental to not only your health but your productivity.

A separate outdoor space, like a garden office, helps to create a more defined distinction between your work and home life. With a garden office, you can tailor your workspace to your own specific needs and preferences, whatever that might be, from soothing blues and greens to lots of stimulating artwork.

Enjoy an abundance of natural light and views with large windows and French doors overlooking your garden, which will help to keep you connected with nature as you delve into your work. We offer a range of design options, all of which are of the best quality, from bi-fold doors to triple glazed installations.

We recently completed a project for a client in Edinburgh who had just had a baby and ran her own business. She was looking to improve her work-life balance and eradicate her commute with a light-filled, creative space on which she could close the door at the end of the day. Take a look at this project here.

2. A garden studio

Ever wanted a dedicated space that’s specifically tailored to only your creative endeavours? Why not turn your Garden Room into a yoga, dance, music or art studio?

Having a space allocated explicitly to your practice and is close to hand can be a hugely motivating factor, encouraging you to do what you love more often. It’s essential to create a space that replenishes and inspires you, and a garden studio can do just that.

Particularly if you’re an artist who paints or sculpts, a garden studio is an excellent option for any garden size. Check out our recent project in Auchterarder; our client longed for a dedicated space where she could paint and practise her yoga, admiring her fantastic garden views and away from the noise and distractions of her home. Her husband then put a flatscreen on the wall to watch opera and rugby, and her daughter commandeered the new room to study for her exams when the time came. Please view this project here. So our JML Garden Rooms can genuinely be a multi-functional space for the whole family to enjoy.

We have also completed art studio projects in both Edinburgh and Glasgow, the results of which you can see below:

3. A games room

If you’ve always dreamed of owning your own pool table, but have simply never had the space, look no further than one of our larger JML Garden Rooms.

A games room can become a hub for fun, relaxation and social gatherings. You could set up a dartboard, table tennis table with tabletop football or a board game area. Or why not create a retro arcade inspired room to enjoy with your family and friends?

Or, if video gaming is more your thing, our Garden Rooms can come equipped with high-speed wi-fi and are perfect for any comprehensive gaming setup and home entertainment system. At JML, our brilliant in-house media consultant can advise you further if you want to go down this route.

4. A guest room

How often have you wished you could have friends or family to visit but lamented that you don’t have enough room for them? A garden guest room will enable you to host your nearest and dearest while maintaining a level of separation and privacy.

Our Garden Rooms can even be equipped with an ensuite bathroom to provide your guests with a 5* experience truly. If it’s lying empty, you could even make some extra money by renting it out to holidaymakers in between visitors.

Here’s a project we recently completed in Forteviot, Perthshire, where our clients created a guest bedroom and bathroom in their garden for visiting friends and family.

5. A summer house, winter snug or living room

A fantastic place to host social gatherings and enjoy your garden - a Garden Room complete with state of the art insulation and plenty of soft furnishings can act as the perfect setting for cosy catch-ups, cheese and wine.

We are proud to be one of the only Garden Room providers in Scotland currently using BBA-rated Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) in our products. This makes our Garden Rooms one of the most environmentally friendly, cost-effective to heat and durable options available in the country - not to mention the warmest!

In the summer months, your Garden Room will become a place to relax and find shade, and with external decking, this area becomes the perfect place for a family barbeque.

6.Additional Commercial Space for Business, Education or Hospitality purposes

If you’re looking for more space for your commercial endeavour, a Garden Room could be the answer.

If you run a restaurant, cafe or community space, a Garden Room can provide you with an additional heated seating area. If you run a small business from your home (like a beauty therapist or a hairdresser), a modern and contemporary Garden Room is an ideal space to run this from. Or, you could even turn your Garden Room into a schoolroom if you tutor or teach short courses.

We recently completed a project to provide additional accommodation to the live-in staff at a Country House Hotel in Perthshire. You can find out more about that here.

7. A Relaxation Space

Everyone needs a place to relax, so many of our clients use their garden rooms as a meditation or zen zone or for a yoga studio or simply to enjoy some peace and quiet away from the bustle of their homes.

Just a stone's throw away from the hustle and bustle of the house, your space will be nestled in the quiet haven of the outdoors. After spending time in your garden’s relaxation room, you'd be forgiven for thinking you’re miles away at some kind of retreat!
